Amy Nicholson

Ayurvedic Postpartum Doula | Herbalist | Yoga Teacher

I first heard the call to support mothers after the birth of my first child in 2017.  My initiation into motherhood was very closely followed by the death of my own mother, leaving my heart wide open, & placing me on a the path of self-study & healing. It was at this time that I was first introduced to Ayurveda, & began training to be a yoga teacher, while also training to be an herbalist.

My very first business was a small online shop that offered herbal products for newborn mothers & babies, & I worked in a local yoga studio teaching yoga for pregnancy & birth. However, over time my work evolved just as I did, & I began serving those that were outside of the pregnancy & birth world. From there, I spent many years teaching classes to share my knowledge of plant medicines, facilitated seasonal women’s circles, offered local yoga classes & worked in the fields at an organic produce & flower farm. It wasn’t until I became pregnant with my second child that I was called back to serving mothers.

My second pregnancy challenged me. I experienced a lot of physical discomfort & was placed on a subtle bedrest due to unexpected health issues. This forced me to step away from much of what I was doing & learn to take care of myself in a way that I had never known before. But it wasn’t just my physical body that needed tended to. Each month that passed, I became more & more aware of the grief that I still held from the loss of my mother so many years prior. My body remembered & it was inviting me to slow down & tune in to what I really needed. It turns out that what I needed was not to “bounce back” or push through like I had in my previous postpartum season. What I needed was to give myself permission to rest, replenish, integrate & heal.

Traditional postpartum care was brought into my life just as my second postpartum was about to begin. I found that this type of care deeply held & nourished me during my first few months postpartum, leaving me feeling more grounded & whole, & offering a way of healing that I had not experienced before. This experience inspired me, & since the birth of my second child, I have trained to be an Ayurvedic Postpartum Care Professional in order to bring these practices into the lives of other mothers & help change the way women are cared for after birth.

Many of us no longer live in tribes or communities, where grandmothers, aunties, sisters + cousins can fill our homes for many hours a day cooking our meals, taking care of other children, & giving us daily massage.  As a mother & caretaker of mothers, it is my intention to help create a new path forward for mothers, as we draw on ancient postpartum wisdom + bring this care into our modern lifestyles in a way that resonates with us + works with the resources we have available at the time. I would be deeply honored to be invited into your home during such an intimate & significant season, & am committed to supporting you with a safe space to be nourished & held in ritual as you begin the sacred work of mothering.

In addition to working with local mothers, Amy teaches online & in-person yoga classes & herbal workshops, and facilitates circles & ceremonies for women. She also works for Herbalists Without Borders as the assistant to the executive director, supporting the organization in their day-to-day operations, and volunteers her time with HWB, where she grows, harvests & prepares herbal medicines that are distributed to refugee mothers in Mexico, and all over the U.S. to those needing access to plant medicines. In addition to serving others, she enjoys being a homeschooling mother, continuing her own education through classes & books, and living a slow, cozy life with her husband & two children.
